What is Food Dignity?
Why the power of dignity is so important in a cost of living crisis…
Life is so often about the choices we make. Big choices and small choices. The power to choose is such a massive part of independence, self-worth and dignity. So many people experiance seasons of life where they can find some choices taken away from them. In a cost of living crisis, the power to choose the food we eat and how we heat our homes can so quickly be taken away.
So what is ‘Food Dignity’? Well the simple answer is creating initatives that give people back the power of choice, especially the power to choose what they eat. We achieve this by creating low cost food pantries and other projects that save people money, either directly or indirectly, and empower choice and dignity.
One such project is The Byker Pantry. This project has been running 6 years in the centre of Byker Wall. The aim of the project is to save people at least 50% RRP on all items. This means that for every £10 people members can choose, at least, £20 of food, with no restrictions. This is not where the project ends, it also creates a place for community, support and advice.
This is one of the projects the Food Dignity Alliance (FDA) will support. Others are Grassboots, Pop-Up Pantries, Babyboots and more to follow.
